The Setup dialog appears when the application starts. It controls the character and pace of the game:
The Yield slider controls the number of words in the letter grid:
| Yield | Word count |
| Sparse | Up to 50 |
| Adequate | 50 to 100 |
| Full | 100 or more |
These counts include only the words Ogle knows; you might find more, if you're fast enough!
The Pace slider controls the time allocated to the player. Each game starts with a small amount of time. As valid words are entered, more is added, with longer words adding more than short ones:
| Pace | Start time | Bonus time |
| Plodding | 48 seconds | 8 seconds |
| Slow | 36 seconds | 6 seconds |
| Unhurried | 30 seconds | 5 seconds |
| Measured | 24 seconds | 4 seconds |
| Brisk | 18 seconds | 3 seconds |
| Fast | 12 seconds | 2 seconds |
| Dizzying | 6 seconds | 1 seconds |
For each letter over three in a valid word, one bonus is added to the clock. Thus, at the unhurried pace, a six-letter word adds fifteen seconds:
(6 letters - 3) × 5 seconds = 15 seconds
At the dizzying pace, a four-letter word adds one:
(4 letters - 3) × 1 seconds = 1 second
Following words invalidate the followed words that precede them. Therefore, when a following word is entered, only the difference between the two bonuses is added to the clock. For example, tester is a six-letter word, so entering it would normally add three bonuses. If test has already been entered, however, tester would instead generate two bonuses: one for the last e plus one for the r, the t having already been counted.
